Twisted Designs Projects:

Community Centre - Mirfield, West Yorkshire.

Twisted Designs Ltd has just completed the first stage design works for a new environmentally sustainable Community Centre in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. The project is for the Mirfield Community Trust Charity Organisation and is worth £1.5 million. Our design objective was to create a building with low energy requirements, an airtight structure with high insulation properties that was aesthetically pleasing.

The building has been designed to minimise its waste through life cycle costing. It uses passive design including natural lighting, solar control and air movement. All materials are to be recyclable or reclaimed to reduce the buildings energy footprint. The main walls are to be of straw bale. It is designed so it will conserve water resources. The main water supply for the building comes from an on-site borehole. Rainwater runoff is stored and then used to flush the toilets which have high efficiency flushing. The waste from the toilets and showers is then taken to a reedbed filtration system. All materials such as insulation and paints used within the building are to be toxic free and can reduce dust and allergens. All materials are to be locally sourced and therefore reduce the embodied energy of the building.

The design of the site and building is so that it preserves and enhances the local bio-diversity of the site and offers the provisions for local eco-systems with such features as a living roof and a wildlife reserve on the site.

The overall site has been carefully designed so that it relates to the local transport infrastructure and improves access to the site by non-car users by providing bus, walking and cycling facilities. The design of Gilder Hall will create a sense of place and community for local residents and will be heavily landscaped making for a unique building experience and enhancing the surrounding area.

21 Dog Kennel Bank, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

The original house was demolished over 15 years ago due to a gas explosion. Twisted Designs brief was to design a new property in the same style as the original house and surrounding terraces.

Due to current Building Regulations and a neighbouring property, the house couldn't be rebuilt as a full terrace and was made into an end terrace house. The house consists of: Entrance Lobby, Lounge, Kitchen, W.C, 2 Bedrooms and a Bathroom with an Attic in the roof space all designed to the clients requirements. The external materials had to be in keeping with the local area. The walls were built from natural stone. The roof used blue slate roof tiles and the windows were double glazed Upvc units.
